HOME NURSING

Home care entails a variety of professional support services that are designed to help individuals live safely and independently at home. While ‘home health care’, ‘home care’, and ‘in-home care’ are interchangeable phrases, there is a growing movement to differentiate between ‘home health care’ which means ‘skilled nursing care’, and ‘home care’, which is non-medical care. These services are provided by professional caregivers such as therapists, nurses, and aides, and may be either short-term or long-term based on the patient's needs in a combination of professional health care services and life assistance services. One division of home care is home nursing which involves long-term, hourly, one- on-one care for adults who are either aged, injured, disabled, pregnant, new mothers, or suffering from a chronic ailment.
The US National Library of Medicine defines home nursing as ‘nursing care given to an individual in the home’. It may be provided either by a family member or a friend of the patient. Professional home nursing is provided by visiting nurses, home health agencies, hospitals, or specific organizations. There are three types of home care nurses based on their credentials and experience — Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), and nurse assistants. Each nurse generally reports to an authorized facility to receive a daily assignment and then commutes to the patient's residence to provide the prescribed nursing care to them.
Home care nurses have a good deal of flexibility and can work with either one patient on a long-term or full-time basis, or visit multiple patients each day. They can also specialize in one area of home care or select several specialties such as pediatrics, gerontology, medical or surgical, community/public health, and psychiatric/mental health. Many agencies employ home nurses, such as home health and hospice agencies, medical centers, hospital systems, insurance companies, government departments, and retirement communities. One can take up a job as a home care nurse as an entry-level role, as the profession does not need a lot of prerequisite work experience beyond the proper education and qualifications. However, if required, senior RN home nurses should have several years of on-the-job experience, which will also help them get better assignments and a more flexible work schedule.
Successful home nurses would do well to have a positive attitude and a good sense of humor, besides being excellent detail oriented problem-solvers and independent workers. They are also expected to have compassion, sensitivity, integrity, physical stamina, good interpersonal skills, and good communication skills.
The BLS estimates that that health care jobs will increase by 15 percent by the next decade, but the job outlook for home health aides is projected to grow by 34 percent by then. One reason why home health care is growing fast is that patients are being discharged from hospitals quicker because of financial pressures and high medical bills. No longer a western concept, home nursing services are now also available with an array of doctors, therapists, and nurses who aid patients of all ages in every Emirate.
