From doctors-in-training who might be having their residency at your nearest teaching hospital to senior practitioners with several years in the field, they all have one common thing they routinely do as part of their work - they all go on call. When dedication matters So, you might be wondering, what does it mean when a roaster displayed in a hospital lobby shows that Dr. Stevens or Dr. Mariam is on call?
It’s a common practice for these essential workers, and when your doctor is on call, they work more hours than average to take care of patients at the hospital. Many times a doctor on call even stays at work overnight to provide consultation and other essential medical services.
Being on a call shift shows the clear dedication your doctor has not just to their profession, but most importantly, to the preservation and sanctity of human life. Whilst many people are happy with a typical 8-hour shift, your doctor often goes beyond those “normal working hours” for the good of society. What you and I may not know

1. The doctor is working beyond “normal” hours or shifts (such as at night and public holidays)
2. They’re expected to be at the hospital site or anywhere near to allow them to quickly show up in the event of an emergency
3. For junior doctors, they’ll normally assist a more senior doctor with their duties and
responsibilities
4. They’re not allowed to do any other activity (work or leisure) during the period they’re on call
5. At times they might end up working way more than 12 hours

The saved funds can be used to buy more equipment and drugs which will go a long way in improving the quality of care for patients. Finally, the medical field is unique as patient needs can arise at any time of the day, therefore, it is always important to have highly skilled individuals to attend to the needs of the sick to preserve human life.
